Upcycling Project Ideas No 2: Glass Jar Soap Dispensers

Glass is a product that is 100% recyclable, and can be recycled time and time again without any loss of quality of the product. So, putting jam jars and mason jars in to the recycling is a no brainer. But putting them in the recycling box is not your only option; you could always upcycle your jars into a fabulous new product for your home.

If you have been into any modern nightclub or posh cocktail lounge, you will have no doubt seen cocktails being served in jam jars. You may think it strange, but they’re on to something. A glass jar is a perfect serving or storage container. They are completely reusable and easy to keep clean, and you can make them look pretty good too.

You probably put a lot of jars in your recycling bin, which is all good, but have you thought about upcycling them? Jars can be a quirky storage option for your home, and who doesn’t need more storage? Less waste and spending less money on buying products, what’s not to love?

Who doesn’t want some eye-catching and quirky storage solutions for their bathroom? These glass jar soap dispensers are super easy to make.

How to make glass jar soap dispensers

What you will need:

Used glass jars (clean)

Soap pumps from used plastic hand wash/soap dispensers

A drill

Pliers

Silicone-based adhesive

Directions:

Clean the glass jars thoroughly. You can use honey jars, salsa jars, pickled onion jars, whatever you like.

Soak the labels and glue off the jars by steeping them in warm soapy water. Nail polish remover usually removes any resistant glue or label residue.

Drill a hole in the top of the jar lid. Make sure you use a large drill bit, which is intended for use on metal.

Once you have drilled the hole, check that the soap pump fits in. If it doesn’t, use your pliers to stretch the hole so it fits.

Secure the pump to the lid hole with the silicone-based adhesive. This will keep the pump fixed in place correctly and will prevent the metal on the lid from rusting.

Let the silicone dry and then fill the jar with soap; voila!
