Our expert team here at Recycling Bins have put together this helpful guide on understanding new, Simpler Recycling Legislation for 2025. For information on how this will affect you and how this can be incorporated into your business, keep reading.
The U.K government is introducing new legislations to U.K recycling in a bid to make recycling simpler and increasing the recycling efforts made amongst commercial facilities in England.
Coming into effect from March 2025, this new legislation will enforce changes in recycling laws for businesses employing ten or more full-time members of staff.
The new legislation makes the business itself responsible for having multi-stream recycling in place, ensuring separation is done prior to collection.
The main purpose behind the new legislation is to ensure that businesses both large and small are following a set of guidelines controlling the separation of waste streams within the workplace. Following the introduction of this new legislation, businesses will be required, by law, to separate their dry recyclable and food waste from their general waste prior to collection being made on site.
The new legislation will affect all commercial facilities in England who have ten or more full-time members of staff. This will include healthcare establishments and academic institutions that fall into this category.
The industries most likely to be affected are those who produce large amounts of food waste such as hospitality venues, care homes and schools/colleges/universities with onsite catering who don't already make a conscious effort to separate this from general waste.
The impacts are actually beneficial to businesses with landfill taxes set to rise to 20% in April 2025, having more waste going to recycling centres, this will save money over the long term.
From March 31st onwards, 'dry recyclable materials' will include; Glass, Metal, and Plastic and Paper and Cardboard. These materials must be separated on site via separate waste bins, e.g. one bin for paper and carboard and one bin for glass, metal and plastic prior to collection. Food waste will now need to be collected and kept separate to all other recycling and general waste. Food waste disposal equipment will be excluded from being used, this includes; macerators, dewatering or enzyme digesters that discharge food waste or any liquids that are derived from food waste and then disposed of in drains or sewers.
With a short amount of time to prepare for these changes, now is the best time to begin preparing your business for the upcoming changes. There are plenty of products currently available that can be suitably adapted for the new recycling legislation. With a wide range of businesses being affected by these changes, no one solution is going to work for all, this is where recycling units and modular systems come in to play.
A multi-aperture recycling station allows businesses to set up one area which can be used to separate and collect multiple waste streams. These units can be tailored to your individual requirements with easily identifiable signage indicating the waste suitable for each bin and even descriptive signage displaying specific items accepted or not accepted.
Available to use as individual recycling bins or as a unit thanks to their unique magnetic joining system, the 60 Litre Wastee is perfect for use in any environment. These units can be made to accept all waste streams plus customisable with different logos, colours and company branding. With the ability to join onto any other matching unit, they can be moved around and used in any area of your business should your requirements change over time.
For a solution suitable to be used both indoor and outdoor, the Maxi Envirobins offer versatility with a generous 140 litre capacity and optional linkage kits that allow you to create a recycling station in, or outside of your business. Signage kits help to make these units simple and easy to incorporate into your current recycling set-up with waste stream specific apertures to avoid the wrong materials being disposed of.
Clear and identifiable signage is a simple and cost-effective way of ensuring that all employees can easily follow recycling rules in the workplace.
The first step for businesses looking to get prepared ahead of the new changes is to identify current waste streams and the effectiveness of the current efforts being made. For some businesses, these measures will already be implemented and may simply need to be enhanced. For many, this will require a complete overhaul of waste management systems.
Identifying key areas where the most waste is being created will be vital as this will allow you to identify exactly what is needed and where. With our wide range of products available, we have products ready to go. If you need something a little more personalised, we can offer a solution that will fit your criteria.
